This is the only way I know how to live
The underlying theme here laid bare. Hopefully the utter destruction of the personification of Hiromi's ideal of wife/life can lead him to form deeper connections, because how many times did they really talk about both of their past relationships? That's when you can get hints of hidden issues in your partner's behavior

it really works perfectly well. Sasuga Kei doesn't write stories so much as she writes melodrama soap operas. Half the shtick is the over-the-top nature of how the characters interact and behave, while still mostly maintaining a veneer of plausibility. There are absolutely people IRL that act like Nonoka have, even in circumstances that go beyond the situation described in that radio call she was listening to in the car (as in, one spouse leaves a partner and kids for an ex or old crush, destroying multiple lives in the process).

It honestly felt rather tame, as she could have waited until the moving truck was there and then be calling him saying "sorry I realize it's the day of moving but I'm leaving you for my ex", which is kind of what I expected in the sense of how dramatic it would get.
Don't give her ideas!!! She could be reading our comments!!:notlikethis:

you raise an excellent point. Hiromi's had blinders on as much as anyone this entire time, chasing his inner perspective of what he wants, and repeatedly projecting it onto everyone around him. You see it again in this very chapter with that phone call talking about pots and pans; he fully overrides Nonoka when she's talking about all the cookware she's got, when she's hinted at how much she likes to cook and be a "provider" before then. He never really engaged with her over that sort of stuff, and it was all more a "checklist" for him—meeting her parents, getting their approval, moving to Tokyo, finding this-and-that apartment, planning everything.
They really did never just talk about what they each were wanting, past the surface level, and Hiromi fell right into the pattern of his own life plan and Nonoka was arguably being swept up in it. Her hearing that radio broadcast was a favor to them both, in that sense, because otherwise she would have left him after they were married, and this way at least they hadn't even moved in together yet.
Nonoka understandably pulled some bullshit here, but Hiromi's just making mistakes again and again on his own end, and it's gotten him burned thrice now.

I think this is the point where he'll be broken down entirely, metaphysically speaking, and now will begin the process of him truly questioning what it is he wants, why he wants it, and whether it's actually attainable, or if he needs to start reexamining the foundations of his expectations for his future.
And it'll happen with a healthy dose of spicy melodramatic harem nonsense along the way, of course.

I'll be honest, I don't read this series but I know Kei and how she operates, so I can only assume that this lady going back to her ex will end badly and in 20+ chapters so she'll come crawling back to the MC but he'll be with another girl.

only thing about that is it would feel...too vindictive, I guess? The read I have is that Nonoka needs to be in a relationship where she's mothering her partner, because she wants to feel like she's the caregiver and that she's needed by the other person. She gets that with her ex, but she never would have with Hiromi, who is (for all his faults) still self-actualized enough as a person to fit the role Nonoka requires.
We see it in this chapter over the cookware thing, but it comes up in other points too, like when they're looking for an apartment and deciding on what's most important, and also when he basically pushes his way into meeting her parents because he personally considers it "the proper sequence". Hiromi has a very strict life plan and understanding of how things "should" go, and that puts him at odds with what Nonoka truly wants.
Yes, she's going back to her ex, and yes, her parents might actually disown her over it, but she's also realized what she really needs, and what would actually make her happiest (and happiest with herself). So that, in a sense, "solves" her character, and ends her story.

If it to crash and burn on her and she came crawling back to Hiromi, it would undermine her entire character journey of her own self-discovery. Yes, it sucks for Hiromi (and he's the protagonist so we would feel more sympathetic to him and his perspective of things), but Nonoka as her own person has figured out the core of her own story arc and is now manifesting it...so I'd argue that if she does show up again, it'll be in a "passing in the supermarket" sort of deal, where we see that she is happy (or at least fulfilled), and Hiromi gets to see that and take stock of how the choice she made was for herself, and how incongruent they really would have been, had they pursued moving in together and eventual marriage.

Because Nonoka the character is another marker on Hiromi's journey of self-discovery and a part of him needing to learn to assess what it is he actually wants, and why he wants it, and whether it's actually important or just something he's internalized as he should want it. She doesn't need to reappear having been fucked over by her ex a second time, in my view, because nothing about that actually does anything constructive for Hiromi's journey and the message of the series as a whole.

It might make some readers feel better in the sense of "haha get fucked you dumb bitch", but that's not what's actually important, nor really that appropriate, and certainly not beneficial to the narrative.

Welp, last chapted made it obvious this was going to happen, but I gotta be honest, it happened way faster than I thought it would.

I was 100% expecting some misunderstanding setting where she sees him with one of the other girls, then proceeds to go to the ex, then him seeing that, and it spiraling downwards from there...

Sasuga Sasuga.

How can NuSerizawa being so forgiven of the cheating loser ex (Naohisa)?? And the way Hiromi got his tie with her broken... he'll get vietnam flashbacks of the times Chika and Lili cut him off.

Considering all this shit was started by the sharehouse's promiscuous hell raiser and selfish go-getter (Anju), now Hiromi will be vulnerable enough to resist her. We may be getting a consensual sexual assault scene from Anju, unless she grows up and chooses to do fair play por the 1st time and wait 'till he recovers. But knowing how Sasuga writes her, it's 99% unlikely.

This is the chance for Lili to redeem herself.

I had the same feeling, but I still think it was rather poorly done. While you say that Nonoka has "discovered" herself, she is in turn making the same mistake as Hiromi: going back to a person who has hurt her before, who presumably has not changed and will hurt her again. Why does she get a pass for acting selfishly, while Hiromi deserves to get burned three times? I think it would make sense for her to suffer later on, just as Hiromi is suffering right now.

Something tells me that Anju is going to use this to her advantage and try to "comfort" him while everyone is asleep

Basically, by the end of the story, his mindset and asset of wants/needs will end up being more in line with Yukari's if he keeps being beaten up by all these grvke trvkes life gives him.

Gotta guess the final test will be the theorized Chika's pregnancy bomb. Is he gonna finally getbthe family he wanted? Or will realize the sharehouse girls are his family and that he doesn't have to need a kid of his, neither a tradwife to be happy? And the only reaspn he'll end up marrying one of the sharehouse 5 is because he'll need a partner to rely on in the task of having to take care of the other 4 women (as well as to financially rely on if he ends up paying alimony for Chika's child if it happens it's Hiromi's too). And if we go by reliance levels, Yukari seems to be the most reliable one, but that will need Hiromi finally assessing his real wants/needs.

If I was Hiromi, I would be freefalling down the redpill pipeline right now..
Lmao noooo. He would become the 2 incel chud protagonists from Haunted Peak if he goes the redpill pipeline. With his vulnerable mind, he would go blackpill supreme gentleman pretty fast and surpass Mikoma and Taiki in the resentment towards women department.

Well we see in this very chapter that her ex has been changing. Quitting his old part-time job that, ostensibly, wasn't paying enough (because he was so focused on "becoming a writer"), thus forcing Nonoka to pick up the slack financially (since she has a stable career). He's quit that, gotten a more stable job, and is still pursuing his dream of being a writer but in a more balanced fashion where he prioritizes taking care of immediate needs and shifting his dream more long-term (and even then, he's made it on the radio—which indicates that he's progressing even with his dream, seemingly after finding ways to better apply himself/learn and grow in that craft). Plus, he broke up with the AP after she turned all selfish, which shows that he also has discovered what he truly wants.

But more than that, I'd argue that it's not even the case that she's getting a pass while Hiromi gets burned, because even though she's "also" going back to an ex, she's also realized something about herself and what she truly wants/needs, which does put her ahead of Hiromi, who still doesn't really know why his relationships keep failing. Nonoka has effectively moved to her end-state, storytelling-wise, while Hiromi's still in the middle of his journey. The actual events are less important than their relative positions in their lives as they relate to their goals (and the same is paralleled in their respective character arcs within the overall plot).
I agree that it looks like Nonoka is going backward, but she kinda isn't when you take all of that into account. Her situation is presented as quite different from Hiromi's, even if some of the circumstances might seem similar.

Now I absolutely could be wrong; but I would not be surprised if Nonoka is just gone from the narrative, outside of some superficial meeting-in-passing near the end of the series where we get a "this is where other characters are now" type vignette. And, I think Nonoka's served her purpose of "breaking Hiromi down entirely to the point where he can hopefully start actually assessing himself and his life". I don't think she needs to re-enter as another "ex returning to try again", especially as we already got that in one ex (who might even return a third time with a pregnancy surprise, as some other readers have posited).
