@HajimeteNHK

I was aware of that before reading, but I was put off by the synopsis. I decided to binge-read it recently and I am now enlightened.

To be honest, I do not really understand this. If someone can explain what is this all about? Mention me so that I will be notified.

A pavlovian response is a conduct in which you associate two things, and hearing one makes you think of the other. The example Pavlov gave: each time he fed his dog he would ring a bell; after a few times, the dog would salivate each time he heard a bell ringing, thus having a pavlovian response to the sound of the bell. You could say that men use things like "I like you" or "you are cute" because they think it would create a response in women to fall for them.

I can't help but read it as: doomer femcel older sister trying to blackpill her lil sis into hating men with muh degenerate coomers trope.

Sooo what's the Pavlovian response she talking about?
It's the girl's response once she hears her (creep) boyfriend saying "she's cute" she then instantly fell in love with him again. Because she used to hearing those words from other (creep) male. Just like Pavlovian Dog instantly salivating once hearing bell sound after being conditioned to it.

I don't think he's a terrible creep, necessarily. At least no more a creep than many/most. And no one in this story is 100% correct, decent and honest:
  • The idol-to-gravure (to AV?) pipeline is corrupt and degrading.

  • The MC's peers are cruel bullies.

  • The MC knows she's being used and going nowhere, but a Pavlovian "happiness" response to praise for cuteness was programmed into her as a child. Like all people, she wants to be happy, so she knowingly indulges herself in this mechanical form of joy as a temporary escape. In this, she's something like a drug addict, simultaneously self-aware and helpless.

  • The MC's older sister coaxed the MC into photo idol work in order to escape her own contract. She then seems to emotionally withdraw from the MC and even subtly criticizes her complicity with the industry she's now trapped in.

  • The MC's (creep) boyfriend conceals urges he's ashamed of because he wants to seem like an idealized version of himself. This sets him up to betray and disappoint the MC, reinforcing the cynical but bitterly realistic lessons she receives from her sister.

Kawaii, in this case = the curse of cuteness.
