I was aware of that before reading, but I was put off by the synopsis. I decided to binge-read it recently and I am now enlightened.

A pavlovian response is a conduct in which you associate two things, and hearing one makes you think of the other. The example Pavlov gave: each time he fed his dog he would ring a bell; after a few times, the dog would salivate each time he heard a bell ringing, thus having a pavlovian response to the sound of the bell. You could say that men use things like "I like you" or "you are cute" because they think it would create a response in women to fall for them.
