WTF probably the scariest ghostly story by Junji Ito. It's so chilling than the usual creepy disgustingness.

I feel like this story sounds better on paper than it really is. Creepy ghosts though. The family is so shitty I wish the ghost ended up killing them anyways.

This. I like this. It isn't a scary story, per se. At least, there's nothing shocking, nothing that gets your blood pressure up, no "oh my god" scenes with terrifying monsters and demons. But it is still a horror story, a bit of an exploration into the depths of human hate. I think that the story takes care to never let the hate be efficacious. If your characters successfully get what they want by committing suicide, that sends a terrible message, even if what they want is to haunt someone else. True, in making sure the girls never get what they want the story turns out a little bit silly, but it is still interesting enough to make up for the lack of raw terror.

Besides, there is a bit of horror coming from the family dynamic, where the younger (adopted) sister does get roundly mistreated and only in death does the family come to terms with how awful they've been. I like to think that it's only because they end up admitting how screwed up they were that they get to survive. Otherwise, I don't think the man shows up delivering the news.
