Using historical figures as a very rough estimate isn't all that crazy.
Pricing depends on a whole lot of variables such as technological development, general prosperity and the ratio of space
opulation, just to mention a few.
If you write a world which is very similar to our late middle age/early modern age, the things that don't line up with our past need to be explained and have reasonable excuses for why things are the way they are.
Doesn't have to be complicated, you could say that despite lacking in technological advancements, thanks to magic, the population is able to live longer lives and more physical labor has become semi-automated. This has led to a population boom similar to what our world saw has seen since the late 1800's.
