Stopped reading at 500 year old house. Man, some authors have no concept of time.

@Hexador I do not get what you say at least check a little from net about reality if you want comparison to a "manga" really to a manga :) , there seem to be many homes at England like Athelhampton House (there are others but this seem enough famous as house) which from 15th century, and what about concept of time that you say; there are a lot of buildings stay well preserved through time as well and not just 500 years.................
ps: And why would someone point out 500 yrs?

No way that acquiring a house in an undeveloped age costs a significant amount.
I looked it up because it smelled like bullshit to me.

The daily salary of a captain in the 1600th was 8 shillings (20 shillings = 1 pound).
The annual cost of a cottage (2 stories, 1 barn) in the early 1400th is 2 pounds.
Now even if we're being generous and assume that the cost is 10 times higher in the 1600th, it only take a captain ~1 month of work to pay the annual fee of a cottage.

@Degernase I think the cost that hurt him was the travel and luggage transportation. And...are you really using historical pricing on a fantasy setting? :/ Also...his house looks like a small estate...not a cottage.

Using historical figures as a very rough estimate isn't all that crazy.
Pricing depends on a whole lot of variables such as technological development, general prosperity and the ratio of space:population, just to mention a few.

If you write a world which is very similar to our late middle age/early modern age, the things that don't line up with our past need to be explained and have reasonable excuses for why things are the way they are.
Doesn't have to be complicated, you could say that despite lacking in technological advancements, thanks to magic, the population is able to live longer lives and more physical labor has become semi-automated. This has led to a population boom similar to what our world saw has seen since the late 1800's.

And he barely had any luggage, just renting transportation shouldn't cost much. What he was saying was that had to choose a place far away from the city due to monetary constraints.
