okay that was a fantastic twist. more than makes up for the ending of the previous chapter with the blind reveal that she didn't die in the accident, and the emotional weight of the story up that point with all the little tells that only click upon a second reading...yeah.
this was a delight with a surprisingly hopeful ending. I can't imagine Kuro won't get some form of bureaucratic discipline for what I assume is a flouting of the rules by allowing Haruto to keep her memories, but, gotta have a bit of leeway, right? (Besides, this way she can more easily step into her eventual role as a guide once she's ready for her own Sleep. Just good planning and foresight on his part, really.)

Honestly didn't see that twist coming. I don't know if bittersweet is quite the right way to describe it, but it's the best word I can think of for this happy-sad conclusion.

What a twist that I didn't expect. May have been a short story but I appreciate it didn't overstay its welcome nor go so convoluted that people would dislike it. Hotaru managed to get closure from her loved ones & sucks that it will be a long time before she sees them again. I wanted to know if Kuro's reputation got lowered based on his co-workers remarks from the previous chapter but shame we don't get an answer to that. In case people don't know, the artist is doing the manga adaption of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian so go check that out if you love the art style. The twist is stupid because we were shown her funeral in the beginning. Not to mention her friends were treating her like a ghost the entire time only to flip the script like this? It felt way too forced and aburt as if it got the axe.

I just went back and checked and while it definitely implied it the story never confirmed that it was her funeral. Odds are it was her bff's and her photo was there. Plus she'd be having an Out-of-Body experience during this manga as she's a veggie throughout the story.

Hair doesnt match her best friends in the picture where we dont see a clear face. Which leads to it being her or some random girl. Not to mention there was the report of 1 fatality and not 2 from the accident.

The 3 who did die kept calling her the ghost and were acting and speaking as if they were the ones alive the entire time.

Tbh I'd have preferred if there wasn't this cheap twist and she became a guide as that's what it appeared to be heading towards until the author had a last minute change with the final 2 chapters

hi, typesetter here. on this point specifically, this is actually our fault and not inujun's. the wording of the text in japanese actually does not imply the number of those killed in the accident, and our translator (unaware of the ending at the time) unassumingly worded it in a way that suggests only hotaru dies. so that's our bad. whoops! (we're going back and fixing that)

That was NOT the twist I was expecting. And it's much better than her just being alive with everyone. I might re-read this soon with this information in the hopper. I was worried that the final chapter wouldn't tie it all together for me, but it really, truly, did.
