I came to the comments to make the exact same complaint. The thing is described as a lightweight training saber, it probably weighs one pound or less.

It's exceedingly ironic that the Japanese are so proud of their samurai and katana history, yet due to the draconian laws in Japan, it's impossible for a person to actually own a katana, unless they get an official permission for a culturally or historically relevant one. Forget about non-katana swords because how they could be culturally or historically relevant in Japan for an individual citizen? You'd need to own a museum.

So, it's difficult enough for a random Japanese person to actually weigh a sword in their hands, even their precious katana type. Although souvenir shops sell stuff that look like a sword from 10 meters away, but if I was a serious author, I wouldn't use those things to get the feel for anything.

That being said, any author could google the weight of a sword and then find an object of similar weight and experience how it feel. Easier to go for a trope, I guess.

Glad everyone is on the same page regarding the weight of a sword. Those books feel like they'd be heavier by a large margin.

Whether nor not Lynette can muster the strength to swing it competently is another matter, but it would have made more sense to call it a heavyweight training saber instead.

And she's gonna need stamina anyway, so taking up jogging or something wouldn't be a bad idea. Things would have to be pretty dire for her to even be able to protect her husband, so she should really prioritize running and self-defense first.

Id love to thing the husband is under a misconception that his first training saber is "light". When in its actually made with a heavy metal that is actually heavy for training reasons like in real life. Use heavy ones for training and use the actual light ones for real use.
I was waiting for the attendant to have a thought bubble about how ridiculously heavy that "light training saber" is.
