Or just some kind of secrecy oath that doesn't require slavery.I can't be the only one who thinks this concept of slavery is odd right? Like, I can understand the authors needing a way to get other characters to joint he MC quickly. But, buying them? Why not rent them? Like, hiring a mercenary. It's just interesting to see almost every author go this route instead of just finding a friend, or hiring a guard who ends up sticking around because of the MC's character, or something.

Exactly, this one is so much worse than a lot of the others because of just that. You know the person was kidnapped and enslaved, but oh well? The slave trader seems to be able to manipulate slave crests/contracts or whatever this manga wants to call them, but doesn't release kidnapped people?Yeah it's largely just lazy writing on the part of the author. Also LOL at the fact that they fully recognize that bandits can enslave people but they have no system for freeing them.
Thinking the exact same thing. It makes no sense. They can identify illegal slaves but despite it being "illegal" and punishing the owner and freeing the slave, theyre like "this is fine with me, can i have some too?".Exactly, this one is so much worse than a lot of the others because of just that. Come on.
To be fair, the need for secrecy means no temporary arrangements. But that does not excuse treating people as goods. This is not the first manga that decides to introduce indentured servitude but spicier and call it slavery, and it just keeps me confused...I can't be the only one who thinks this concept of slavery is odd right? Because "the church" is usually the evil org (irl too lol) and they have a very strong monopoly of light magic, and if they hate the toilet thing and can't figure out who is making them, or they know ant the country he is in won't give him up, I definitely could see a war starting from that, cause (it seems) sewage purification is an international business the church has and I'd assume it rakes in the big bucks, a self purifying pooper will all but eliminate that money tree if it's popularThe slavery issue aside, the other thing that bugs me about this chapter is the bit about the church and the toilet bowl.
Why would they be furious at him for using purification magic in a toilet? It's already been established that they use it on the city sewers on a regular basis. If anything, it seems like they would be happy to not have to send high ranking priests down into the sewers every couple months.
I could imagine them forcing him to work for the church, but not going to war over the use of purification magic on poop (when they do it themselves already)
Tbf slavery is a thing that has happened for thousands of years in every civilization, i would be shocked if a magic society didn't have it, also with magic to protect them, honestly, becoming a debt slave to pay off your dept seems almost better than a normal job... and honestly some crimes (rape, anything to do with children, and serial killers to name a few) deserve the cruelest of punishment, and criminal slavery over prison or death (death is far too easy for those kinds of people) would fit the bill perfectlyTo be fair, the need for secrecy means no temporary arrangements. But that does not excuse treating people as goods. This is not the first manga that decides to introduce indentured servitude but spicier and call it slavery, and it just keeps me confused...
Also, since they have magic that can enforce slavery like this, why aren't there simply magical oaths or whatever that do not require treating people as goods?
The fuck? So they know that someone was illegally turned into a slave, but they just leave them as slaves despite that?Illegal slaves - Those who were captured by bandits and illegally brought into slavery. There is no formal provision for release, but the slave may purchase their own freedom.
