The holy angels aren't evil, but they aren't good either. They're like whimsical Greek gods in a way.

Man what is it with Japan and making angels the bad guys all the time. Like I get they have a history of anti-christian beliefs, but holy hell I think the last "good" angel I've seen was in Oh My goddess and even then I'm halfway certain they didn't call them angels in that.

I think that's due to the Medival influences. Like how the church was used by the royal family to follow them, and when you thunk of beings closely related to church then you got angels

@fakeirish its probably more just a subversion of our moral principles, i mean doesn't everyone think angels=good? and wouldn't then the best way to add some sort of a twist to a story is to make the things we generally see as good, actually be evil? and it also throws some further twists since we instinctively think, "is the MC/heroine etc a bad guy since angels are coming after them? but we've seen how they act since we're seeing their perspectives, so they aren't etc"

@fakeirish : Ah my Goddess centered around the Norns, last I checked the Norse gods were not Christian. Though it did have angels, but they were bonded servants of the god(desse)s. and the Demon cat got one as well.

@Kidawesome55 : Then you do not pay much attention, religion has started more wars and atrocities then pretty much any other cause. The less developed the society the more power it holds, and you can still see this in the modern world the lower the average education level of an area the more power the religion and superstitions of the area hold over its populace. Heck you can even see this shift in power between regions of the US.

In virtually every manga I've read that had angels of some sort in them, they're always far from 'angel-like'. Morally or literally, sometimes both.

I'm gonna guess that somehow by watching over the hellfire the shamans were holding back the angels, but the MC's sacrifice going awry freed them and let them take down the shaman village.

@fakeirish I mean, I’m not a Christian, but I heard that the Bible’s description of angels were like golden circles with 100 eyes, 3 heads with 6 wings with bird claws, a human without wings (which is creepy to me because I have a small fear of “imposters”), and more descriptions that are more grotesque than those little Cupid’s on valentine cards. Not really your questions but a cool fact. The answer for your question (from me) is that the church back in the Middle Ages had a lot of power and sometimes they just abused their power. The crusades could be an example (even though that is VERY controversial, but this is mangadex and nobody really cares about this stuff). So that maybe why.
