Not surprised at this kind of ending. The hero deciding to live would be a bit shallow without any character growth, and the hero dying would be way too heavy for a comedy series.

Although I do feel like it could've gone on for longer, it's best if a series doesn't overstay its welcome.

They could have ended it with the hero killing the goddess and being forcefully turned into the new one, then she starts sending swarms of new heroes to harass the Demon Lord into killing her.
