Why else do you think there are so many people in Japan who work in really bad and exploitative conditions (aka., black companies) to the point that they either die because of stress or commit suicide.
It grows on you like a cancer, this happened outside the US:
back in college a certain fortune 500 corpo karoshi'd at least 1 soul per month, and while the corpo tried to fix that its workers [engineers mostly] near me clearly understood that anything less than total dedication meant their contract not getting renewed or no career advancement
I saw a complete dude-bro and friends about to go on a wild vacation completely fold and bend over when he got "offered" extra hours, the teach who offered was his direct superior in the corpo
when questioned, this dude and any others that I asked looked at me as if I was a dumb kid and told me it was the most obvious thing to do/expect and that I was a fool for expecting anything else, blah, blah...
I myself got into a top 10 fortune 500 company and while it was a million times better and meritocratic [no karoshi] it still got told "comic" stories of very real people that got themselves fired for taking medical leave for work related incidents [engineer, heavy machinery crushed leg], the joke? they believed they still had a job after ASKING and TAKING medical leave.
I'm NOT Japanese, nor did this happen in Japan
