It never cease to amuse me how they show westeners falling in love at first sight with japanese food when the most common reaction is "this is fucking disgusting" to stuff like sushi, nato, soy sauce or sashimi. Anyway, this is much better than the dumbass author of "Tensei Shite Inaka de Slowlife wo Okuritai", who tried to promote "muh superior japanese food" by naming European food that happens to be popular in Japan.

I wonder if this sorta thing will ever work its way out of anime and manga. The vast majority of manga have the obligatory "this is the best thing I've ever eaten!" when a character goes through some almost excessive hardship just to get rice and soy beans or whatever. Is there a quota that has to be filled every time a manga is written? It's a little bit of a tired trope at this point.

Ah yes, the supreme seasoning, soy sauce. No isekai is complete without it...

...along with rice, miso and for some reason mayonnaise lol

There's a fine line between showing a bit of pride in your culture/nation's dishes and using said dishes as tools specifically to express their self-perceived superiority over others. I'd like to think most other cultures don't cross that line.

Not to mention this kind of thing rarely crosses over from in-person conversation to published fictional works... except in modern isekai.

And regardless of whether or not that's true, cultural grandstanding and posturing is always annoying because it's almost always obvious when it's being done. The author may not have went too egregious in this one – MC missing his homeland's dishes is not unreasonable – but we still have the uninitiated foreigners being instantly amazed and swayed over the moment the food enters their tastebuds as if they just consumed the nectar of the gods.
the only culture that doesn't do that is american culture

Ah yes, the other staple aside from a swimsuit chapter. The Japanese food chapter with the ever-supreme soy sauce.

people complaining about japanese people saying their food is the best as if every country besides america doesn't also do that
Besides America? America claims to be best at everything. Food specifically isn't that much, but there's still a fair amount of it.

And we don't do it here in Sweden. We know our native food is simple and bland to a lot of people, especially Asians and South Americans. But we also like the natural flavour of the stuff we eat, rather than have to add a ton of spices to it. We also like to steal things and make it our own, like kebab pizza.

What we do like to do is force-feed people some of our more unique treats and laugh at the reactions.

My first reaction was, "This is candy." There's so much sugar in it.

Why is Frey weirded out about raw fish? She was going to eat a live baby way back when.
They have to have their standard reactions. It's mandatory.

We pride ourselves in our food, but in a different way. Our food is good because it comes from many different cultures around the world, immigrants importing their cuisine and adapting it to what's available. We don't think "we're the best at food" because there is hardly anything truly original in the US that wasn't influenced by the outside. Think of literally any food in the US and you can point to a path outside of it. We're proud of our melting pot, but its a different pride than Japan's extremely overinflated opinion of itself. (Yes its ironic to say that our pride is better than Japan's pride, but its so tiring to see this over and over)

This is the one trope that I'd gladly see someone subvert a bit. Like people disliking the food or someone saying it's not that special or them trying to impress people with dishes but they've already been invented. Even just the total reversal where the food is much better in the isekai world and the MC gushing about it.

Other than that it'd be funny to see some parodies about different cultures doing the same kind of cultural masturbation in an isekai world. Like some Swedish person getting isekaid and forcing surströmming, akvavit and pickled herring on everyone, or some American going wild about some Rocky Mountain Oysters or a French person espousing the deliciousness of escargot and frog legs.

almost all cuisine in america is from other cultures, it's why it's one of the few things america doesn't jerk itself off for

It just feels so much more honest if characters have different reactions to things. Not everyone likes the same thing.

We don't force anyone to eat surströmming. We force them to smell it, and then we challenge them to eat it or laugh at them for being wimps. ;) What we do force people to eat is our delicious candy. Sweet, salty, or sour. But we don't expect everyone to like the latter two. Just see the above reaction to not eating surströmming.

As far as American food goes, I quite like the Cajun kitchen.
