I don't really understand the point of this, since the original manga was already basically "what if we write CGDCT with boys and irony."

No. Boys Doing Cute Things existed before them, even for a formally male audience. A prime example is "Kimi to boku". As far as I understand, the original goal was to create a gentle parody of 00s CGDCT trend, depicting a school comedy about silly boys instead of cute girls. You can even find direct references to this when one of the characters' sisters tries to be cute and "form an all-female rock band to become popular."

So, the attempt at a gender reversal from the same creator feels like something in the spirit of Nolan. A parody within a parody. A dream within a dream.
