At least the “technically illegal but commonplace” discrimination here in the Netherlands,
id est charging females more for the same haircut is done because it's very good for business.
I've also read things about Japanese companies being absolutely unwilling to fire employees who are not pulling their weight but otherwise making an effort, and conversely employees not willing to go to a different company when they receive a better offer, because of a mutual relationship of loyalty —here, if one receive a better offer from a competitor, one would take it, and no one would blame one for it. It is after all business, and nothing persona.
