@xp32

I remember when another scan picked that up.

iirc that scan was a group of transgender individuals who wanted to villianized the sister of the "non binary" character when she was being mean to him.

It's madness.

I'm saying the word is so out of place, you'd think they would use "former male" rather than that word.
Yes if they did; no if they didn't — apparently they did in this case.

It's western influence seeping into non western media. Like how these companies (cough cough funimation and crunchyroll) will take a translation and insert something the original author didn't intend.
It has nothing to do with “western”, as I said — English culture is also known for using avoidant language, just as Japanese culture.

It has to do with cultures that use avoidant language and those that do not.

“western” is such a joke term to begin with — there's no such thing.

It might not be on the same scale. but now this character is saying "I identify as.." rather than saying "I'm just a former male"
Yes, and from what I read in this thread, that would be a translation error, for the purpose of localization, opposed to translation, and, let's be honest, in this case what seems to be politics.

But that has nothing to do with “western” — that has to do with “The United States of America” if anything, which, ironically, is probably the single country on the planet that takes this meaningless term “western” the most seriously.

And yeah that's what I'm saying when I say "western" it's English.
“Western” and “English" are not the same, and I find that in practice they are only used so synonymously, typically by U.S.A.-residents, under the assumption that all countries where the inhabitants tend to look “white” have a similar culture to them.

Okay alright let's get off this western vs english topic I don't care.

Its just clear to me that the "west" more specifically special groups here in america,import goods from other cultures and change things around to suit their interest. When I just want the original intent from creators. Cause that's what makes it interesting.

If these people would have their way, they'd use mental gymnastics to make most crossdressing boys a "I identify..." situation rather than "I just like cute things..."

Changing the entire atmosphere of the manga.

That's a very reduced claim of your original claim, but fine.
So you know: your original claim implied that “trans” is a concept unique to U.S.A. as you now called it; it isn't, and there are many, many words for it in Japanese of varying degrees of accuracy, and quite a bit of Japanese fiction does simply use it, but this wasn't one of them.
You claim it's a difference of culture; I disagree, I simply find it a mistranslation.

@kurisu
Then why didn't you do it in the other example?
No one denies that the auctor's intention is that the character is transgender, but the auctor also intended the character to use avoidant language to soften that.

the way to literally say trans girl is way longer in japanese. this isn't avoidant language, its a shorter term.
性同一性障害の女性 or トランスジェンダーを女性 is way longer than 元男.

@thepythia, no one outside of medical specialists says “gender identity incongruent person” in English either.

The most common Japanese word for “transgender” is... “transgender”, loaned from English and just as commonly shortened to “trans”, just as in Dutch where the formal term is also “geslachtsidentiteitsincongruente”, which is only used by specialists.

transgender is the western term for the same phenomena.
japan has always used the term GID for trans, and it has been historically used by trans woman.
The left term is woman with GID, the right is transgender woman.

Both are way longer than 元男.

Thank you. I am glad that there are actually people in the discussion that have the same logic as me.

@kurisu
I am not going to argue if you feel that way but I have my own thought.
Are you the 'original' author? So, I am sorry if I didn't notice that.

@trapsarebetter
No context but your nick is amazing lmao. Love it!
Give the traps real boobs then it will be the ultimate trap, and that's the best IMO

“identify as” is one of the lies-to-children we tell cis people, don’t pick it up and try to beat us with it unless you want a mauling

I have no idea what it means.
In Dutch, we just say “I feel super uncomfortable in this body and I hate it, and would like that it change to more resemble a body associated with the opposite sex.”, which seems more to the point to me.
Now, this sounds very long, but we have a convenient short-hand for it too which more or less comes down to “I'd like to have myself rebuild”, as in like “reschooled” but “rebuild”; it's hard to translate but it sounds rather catchy.

We also have a verb which more or less means “to slap one's semi-erect penis against a solid surface, typically the face of another, or the Taj Mahal, repeatedly”

Granted, not all femboys or traps arent. But at least have standards.

Your fetishism exceeds your rationality.

The toxicity really ramped up at the end, huh?

Why aren’t these asshats banned?

I got a “tag all spoilers” warning for saying “new information is in the next chapter” one time but these people get away with hate speech.

I smell a problem at the top. I think people in charge agree with them.
I think a fork of the site will happen someday. If you allow hate speech in a place then you attract people who use it, and drive away others.

It’s happened before in many communities.
