Here's my prediction for next chapter based on the current pace. He didn't actually know what it meant when he bought it, but somehow knew after the fact, and didn't want to return it or didn't have the time. So he didn't actually meant to, but also knew what it meant.

I think he knows. He said "I-I was way too worried, thinking about whether this would be okay or now." I read this as he was worried about expressing the feeling meant by the candy.
