It's a luxury ingredient because of what it's made from, not because it's any good.

Edit: I am completely fine with this mangaka making filler arcs until the author finally gets moving again. That was good.

Yeah, LN has 6 volumes and we already blew past it with the clown arc. Not sure about WN, but I think it ended at the equivalent of volume 4

meanwhile Kamachi, Author of Index series keep continue writing new index volumes and also have time to wrote multiple sides stories.

As far as I know, it's not a joke in East/South Asia, so joking about it probably is meaningless for the Japanese audience at large. It works for youtubers like Uncle Roger because the audience is international, and the channel is in English anyway. Unless Japan is totally different in this matter compared to the rest of the South/East Asia.

They aren't. "Ajinomoto" is the most popular brand of MSG internationally (although there's probably a brand in China that's more common in China, because that's how these things work) and Aji No Moto (味 の 元) literally means "Source of Flavor" in Japanese.

To be fair, in lots of parts in Asia, texture is a staple of cuisine.

Especially regions that had a long poverty timeframe and/or no real access to plentiful spices/condiments/etc.

But yeah, I agree with you, that besides it having luxury feel and it's special texture, taste is definitely not what I would call it's strength, so it was an odd choice for this "no umami"-part.

It's a texture/consistency thing rather than a flavor thing. Plus the fact that you can add pretty much any flavor to that texture without any conflict from the nearly non-existent flavor of the shark fin itself.
