We all said the same thing when the rabbit girl got merked, but I suppose we'll see.
She didn't get merked, she was forcibly turned into a youma losing all control. Something she would've turned into at some point regardless, not to mention this scenario is literally a huge part of what this story is centered around. It needed to happen to further develop kagura's character, especially if it ends up happening to raito before they find a cure.

Rabbit girl was turned into a youma, which is a very important theme of the story, that's not the same as randomly dying without even putting up a fight.
My main point wasn't that the rabbit girl being killed off was bad, but rather how quickly it happened after being introduced to her character.

We didn't really get as much time with her as we could've, which really softened what should've been an emotional gut-punch. Instead it elicits a "dang that sucks" response.

Not that killing an important character is bad, either. Or that doing it suddenly is bad, it isn't. That kind of sudden death can really bring stakes into a story, like almost anyone could be axed at any moment.

Basically, killing a supporting character to emphasize a theme is cool, but I would've liked a little bit before then so the death had more weight.

Another problem I have is that the current antagonists are in fact a bunch of writing sins in one pot.
They can strike pretty much out of nowhere and then teleport away, which is just a completely cheap way on them getting the drop on the main characters.

And what the "Oh, her turning into a youma was for the theme" overlooks is that she very much was fridged.
Shortly after her introduction, the new antagonists appeared out of nowhere, forced her transformation with a hithertho unintroduced concept of the instant youmafication(Which honestly works against the theme of the ninyou having to keep that part of themselves in check), then teleported away with no consequences to them at all.

Honestly, I gotta say it, the story is competently written, but badly so. The author isn't an amateur with his first draft, but knows how to write, it's more that he has chosen established but terrible tropes to create his antagonists. A thing I also saw and loathed in "Jungle Juice" which had the exact same problems with their main antagonist group.
