This is geopolitical posturing, I won't get too far into because I am far from a an expert; but being the "head" of a multinational organization plays a huge role in how a country is perceived by other countries in regards to strength, especially so if this coalition is a military one that is supposed to leverage military firepower against monsters, enemy states, whatever you pick.

Typically, the US in particular, is typically regarded as "the most powerful military in the world" (please do not argue with me about this it's not relevant, I'm just stating why the US is acting the way it does in the manga) so if the US isn't the leader of a military force then they lose face. Doubly so when the country chosen is Japan instead, a nation that technically does not have a standing "army" but rather a self-defense force, and does not have nearly the same defense budget as the US.


The far reaching political implications can be things like US citizens questioning why the US spends so much on military if they can't even "win" against Japan in the monster-killing "war." This is just an example of why this political posturing matters to these characters. Again, I'm not arguing for or against anything I said, I'm just trying to explain to purpose of the story-telling device called "politics" in this series particularly, so anyone else reading this please don't bother arguing politics with me lol.

Internally, a lot like Loliphilosophy mentioned.
Surely the opposition in America would take that show of weakness to attack the government. Just like how the Japan’s side got their hyenas waiting for the prime minister to make a mistake.

Also, while democracy usually came with a stance that everyone are equal, usually leader’s voice carry more weight.
Not-USA-led military cooperation means higher chance everyone can decide something and move on their own. Who knows what those military power can be repurposed for. Also, if this proof Asia can be self-sufficient in cooperation and maintaining stability of the region, America’s bargaining power would also weaken (Asian: We can deal with this on our own, thank you. Go mind your own business).
