Was the lady at the end already introduced in a previous chapter, or is she a new character?

A new character. Ameishi's art style does make some characters (particularly women) look similar, but the next chapter will reveal this character's name and backstory.

The problem with writing about people that you know, is, well, they’re people that you know. Just ask Truman Capote and the ‘swans’.

Pretty much my only nitpick with Kaika but it adds more to the period piece atmosphere of the manga so I can excuse it.
