There's really no righteous person in this manga. Certainly Hatomura was not, and while Kaji might be described as idealistic given his views at the time (he's all-in on 1990s neoliberalism which was very outside the Japanese political mainstream at the time the manga was written), he certainly doesn't rise in politics in a righteous fashion.
