The fact that the character is canonically female means we, as readers, can imprint her appearance to simple tomboyishness. By doing this, the barrier that keeps people from BL isn't broken or even tampered with (since there have been far more popular reverse traps out there with far more "Boyish" features) while also allowing the BL audience to rely specifically on the designs. Basically, the Author can reach both the BL and non-BL markets in one fell swoop without pissing off or pushing away either of them. They're not the first author to do it...

And they won't be the last.
