Arrows are expensive? Maybe high end arrows, but you can make do with cheap ones ez.
Don't believe Video Games, RPGs, or modern prices.

Medieval arrows took like 1-2 hours labor per arrow IIRC, between preparing the shaft, the arrow head, as well as attaching the fletching and the head to the shaft. From what I saw a sheave of 24 arrows cost like 10-16 pence and an unskilled laborer was paid 2 pence a day. headless were still like 5 pence a sheave iirc.

No one would use cheap arrows when their life was on the line, those would be target practice at best.

They could cut costs by buying the individual components and assembling them yourself. but that would require skilled labor and most of your rest time.

I mean, even cheap ones will need fletching, even in real life with mass production arrows are still fairly expensive (like 2-3€ a piece) and actual hunting arrows are probably 5-10 times that price, with dungeoneering and monster hunting your odds of losing or breaking arrows are probably high.

I'm still expecting the granny to turn back to her youthful appearance or something...

But damn, even if it doesn't happen, she must be kept in the party!

She just needs her back restored so she can move better, and her hips.

Except we could say the same for all of their equipment. Melee weapons and armor all need maintenance and the upkeep cost of those are not cheap either. I probably should have added that context to my post. =P
It is kinda silly seeing people with swords and metal armor but arrows are "too expensive" xD
But, if mages are easy enough to get as "rear-line" damage then it could make archers too expensive. =\

No.
Gear could last lifetimes properly cared for, and repairs were nowhere near as expensive as new items.

Someone who did not grow up wealthy would most likely be using a polearm or spear, maybe an inherited sword. Cost to benefit ratio, nothing beats a spear or polearm.

If a weapon broke, it would more likely be the wooden shaft of a polearm or spear, and well that is a lot cheaper to replace then the metal end.

Otherwise normal maintenance would not be expensive and something you do yourself not send to a professional blacksmith for.

Arrows on the other hand would be a constant steady drain of resources.
Also, archers is actually more strength intensive than most melee weapons, because order to do damage you needed to pull hard, which meant a decent draw weight. You literally had to start training from a young age to be an archer, and they can tell who was one because it affected your development and the shape of your bones.
