It's a lost in translation thing, mentioned in zorogou's post: https://forums.mangadex.org/threads...uketa-amari-chan-ch-4-1.2243160/post-25981032. When they say "girlfriend" in the original Japanese script, they say "gaaru frendo" (which means more like "girl friend" or maybe even "lady friend") and not "kanojo" (which means girlfriend in the usual sense).

Wouldnt it be the opposite? It seems to me like the english term would be the more straightforward one as "a girlfriend", while "kanojo" can literally just mean "a girl".

”kanojo” as a noun is girlfriend and not girl. I think you are thinking about kanojo as the pronoun she/her, but there’s not really a way to obfuscate between the noun and pronoun. I think what you’re saying isn’t really the opposite though? The thing is that in the original Japanese, they aren’t saying “girlfriend” in the usual sense of “lover“ while the English translation is the straightforward “girlfriend”, which is confusing the other readers.

The LN TL wrestled with this one too, flirting with "female friend" as an EN EQ for a while before settling on the space-separated "girl friend".

Kanojo can be both, just as kareshi can be both any old similarly-aged guy and a boyfriend (Kuranika has this confusion as a major subplot point beginning in V2).

Kanojo can be both

It does not mean girl/a girl, it's the female pronoun. It doesn't make sense to say "XXX is a kanojo" if you're trying to say "XXX is a girl", unlike "XXX is a joshi" or "XXX is an onna."

Kareshi is different in that it's practically only used to mean boyfriend. Kare is the male equivalent of kanojo, and there is not really a colloquial age restriction on the usage (other than it's weird to use as a pronoun for a child).

(Kuranika has this confusion as a major subplot point beginning in V2).
