I thought it had more to do with certain translators trying to profit off of these via directing people over to their own website. And locking chapters behind a pay wall.
@Blacktart I think that's a separate issue. Profiteering was discuss in site update post. This ownership issue is more likely to due to mass DMCA take down. For legal reason, MangaDex doesn't want to take ownership of stuff that is uploaded anymore. That's why the ownership was to be passed on to scanlators instead.

I'm not a lawyer but this way, if someone want to send cease and desist they'll have to send to scanlator individually instead of do it en masse to hosting service (MangaDex). I have no idea what it'll mean in legal term, but this site has became too big that it has become target for big manga. We might be witnessing the end of an era here, ONCE AGAIN
:fml:

Can I have a hint on the "other hosting site"?
[REDACTED] is my go to. It even has some mangas that aren't on here. It looks shabby and you need an adblock, but it pretty much has everything right on there without needing to use any links to other sites

They post on [REDACTED] too. [REDACTED] is my second alternative since their database is very big, unfortunately they do not have hentai but is a compromise. In case you can read the ranking on everythingmoe.com.
Went to check that site, definitely a good option, and their database is not indexed so... and I already saw my chapters were being uploaded there XD so saves me the work.

It's not even that. It's one thing if someone actually purchased the license, but the vast majority of these takedowns aren't licensed. It's some Karen mass DMCAing every manga they can, burring Mangadex in legal fees and making it too expensive to act in their legal right.
Agreed been seeing a bunch of Kodansha and Square published stuff got DMCA'ed on Dex the past few days. And as you mentioned even the ones with no official translation license were affected. Not sure who other publishers were being Karens though.

Well, then make no sense, at this point MD can close down completely since nobody have the license or the right to upload a translation with the permission of the official publisher.
When they got the DMCA'd, that is practically one of their choices, or be a platform for independent authors to publish their stuff if that is a worthwhile endeavor.

The rest of the scanlators that publish here from the moment MD changed their policies they become accountable for what they put in here. I had once to deal with a Cease and Desist with a sue included (thankfully not with manga), as long as the people hosting the content are taking a risk (theirs is higher of course) I am willing to take a risk with them by scanlating.

Thanks for sharing that link, I am going to start uploading there from now on besides [REDACTED].

Can I ask you to update the mangaupdates site too? Or create your own account there if you have a discord or preferred site. been trying to use that more often now again due to the recent strike

[...] in favor of [REDACTED] or [REDACTED].[...]
[REDACTED] was nice for a long time, but they have these white pages ("read free at [REDACTED]"etc) they insert which seemingly even overwrite pages, which makes it a pain in the ass.

heck it even happens to the thumbnails on the frontpage:
batoto.png

and I can't find a way to remove them, but googling around nobody else seems to have this problem, for some goodforsaken reason.

Well, there are dark sides of copyright works sector.
Mostly, authors of works not have copyright of their work.
Many big companies have it, and they try to get money, as most as possible, from the work, regardless of copyright law principle.
Right now, most part of copyright law is not protecting copyright work, rather protect those companies interests instead.
Plus, those companies also greedy too.
You may know or see news that several authors still not have much money or in bad position.

idk if u are in discord server but we did ask for clarification on this matter but they said they will answer on later date(what imo means we were right on our assumption of what it means) and after that "closed" down support channel(we can no longer write in it)

If I understand correctly, these rules are talking about your copyright to the translation, right? Not the copyright to the original work. So you just need to live in a country where translating something is considered a derivative work with a separate copyright, and everything becomes a-ok?

As for 2.3, that is just md explicitly protecting itself so they can say that as far as they are aware, they have the right to platform the content. I guess this means they could never again get DMCA'd? as they would instead just forward any dmca to the user that uploaded the stuff? (and 2.2 is so they can claim that they were guaranteed that the uploaded had the rights to give them said permissions)

Just a heads up, while it's understandable that many want to announce their new home or a pause of uploads, they are fake/announcement chapters and will be removed when users report them.

And to avoid people from reading too much into this; removing personal/group announcement chapters is nothing new.
