Nani starts with な or na. Words that end in な/na, ぬ/nu, ね/ne, に/ni or の/no are all fine, since as you just pointed out, there’s lots of words that start in them. It’s ん/N that’s the kicker, since it has lots of words that end in it but none that start with it. All Japanese letters start in a consonant and end on a vowel, all except for ん/N which only has a consonant, and for Japanese, it’s impossible to have a consonant start a sentence and immediately continue with a consonant after that.nani
