I’m pretty sure he did try to do something. I’ve already forgotten about most of the stuff that happened in the beginning, but I do remember him telling riho to treasure herself more. She didn’t really do that though, so he said f that hoe. It is true, he didn’t ask her on dates and stuff, but why would he when he knows he wouldn’t get the pure relationship he wants from her? Also, I stg, if the mc even interacts with riho again im going to get mad. Dude needs to learn to forget about her

I think what Niyama is trying to tell Yamagishi is that he never tried to understand the person he thought he was in love with. He assumed Iida held all these 'pure' values based on her reticent nature, and when he was confronted with the fact that she is curious about sex and is willing to sleep with people she's not necessarily in love with, he short-circuited.

He started hating himself for not upholding the standard of 'pure' love he believes in. He started hating Iida for also not meeting this standard, internally calling her names such as slut. Instead of communicating with Iida he didactically told her to treasure herself without inquiring why she's doing what she's doing.

Hmmm of course my gutt feeling is right the one time I decide to reject it. I'm glad Niiyama stopped herself in the end though (or was it a fake reveal )
