Oh shit, I think I've got it. He's not the Rabbit's son, he is the dead boxer's son. The dead boxer was in a relationship with the MC's mom but when he died the MC's "father" married the now widowed soon-to-be mother. That's why the MC's boxing style isn't exactly "defensive".
