They are basing it on the spine, vertical stripes run parallel to the spine

I actually used this one ↓ to try to figure out what she was doing in some of the steps

Yeah, but the fish swims horizontally, so its spine is horizontal as well. Vertical stripes should be the ones running perpendicular to the spine, and horizontal are the ones running parallel.

I'm not critiquing the translation, because you have to go by what's in the book, but I'm confused about who taught the author spine orientation of a non-bipedal fish.

Don't the Japanese use the term "hafu" for basically anyone who's doesn't look or doesn't look completely Japanese. Kinda dehumanizing term in my opinion.
