@Marchimarch Something is 100% missing somewhere, because I've read the raws of the WN way back when and it felt way more fleshed out.

Spoiler about upcoming event:
People will die

Spoiler following previous event about upcoming event
The whole city will go squish

So this is actually a 'don't get attached to any characters other than MC ever' type of manga? It's rather long to wait for 6 chapters to reveal the real theme isn't it? I never get the appeal of this kind of thing, like that one anime titled Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara where it was a typical romcom but turned edgy midway through. At least if it's 1 or 2, or maybe 3 chapters then it might be fine, but 6 chapters? That's almost a volume worth of misleading.

No buildup. Just straight up shat on the previous chapters with a congested backstory of whatever. Dropping this.

Stories often do stuff like this to justify the power creep of the MC later. This is also common in fanfiction, especially self-inserts back in the earlier days of anime fandom. As long as the author gives his character a tragic backstory, it will be the license to get all the girls / all the power afterwards.

@raytung

True but this is just a worse/exaggerated version of 'the woman in the fridge'. I'm not saying that having a character die as a push for the lead to develop or something. But this seemed more like a shock factor than anything, at least for me. I am someone that appreciates a bit of foreshadowing and what not, I guess.

Maybe it was better executed in the novel?

@Bling Massive spoiler, I drop the novel exactly because of the next thing that happened so thread carefully.
The MC told the password, everyone the MC knows was killed, causing him to snap and using his barrier to literally crushed everyone. I mean literally everyone.

So the "villain" is just a warmongering getting upset when people don't like him using banned magic and literal fucking monsters that may just snap if not treated properly and eat his own troops? That's uh... interesting?

@Asinine_Rymme I looked at the Novel Updates reviews and holy shit were people pissed. It's apparently just as bad(maybe even worse) and the fact that it turned into a generic isekai pissed people off even more.

Usually I shake my head when people go "but why doesn't the MC just kill all the bad guys", but really, if he put a barrier on Falco then the entire family would be barriered and he could probably kill them all before anything bad happened to them. It wouldn't be a bad answer to the situation either, since it's an armed uprising and not some issue you should treat with more nuance.

said this before on earlier chapters but the main problem is that he forgot that he's a slave and can be forced by others all because he was receiving payment. Just because you get a paycheck, doesn't mean your not a slave. If you life and safety is threatened anytime you disobey, you aren't free.

That being said, yeah, the control he already has over barriers should have let him kill ATLEAST the Marshal and the messenger. I get that he's busy worrying about them but his concern over confirming they're safety cost him the opportunity to save them. The moment he confirmed that the Marshal had no intention of negotiations should have been the moment his head was crushed in a barrier.

Hmm, this is reminding me why I hate nationalism and militarism. Nothing against the people that serve, but I will never enjoy killing over nothing more than abstract beliefs and ideals. Not to mention both are two primary reasons we got stuck with WW1 and WW2 (so fundamentally flawed). Plus the idea that “my country needs to be the best and who I kill to make it that” is just mean. A normal level of nationalism where you just love your country is great, but the extreme is terrifying.

Regardless I’m looking forward to how this goes. Honestly I would have much preferred a more fluffy slow life as the MC grew in ranks and enjoyed his new family, and I will never forgive that for disappearing so quickly, but I am interested how this ends. The dark turn feels a bit forced, but also surprising. I see people saying the MC could just kill them all, and I’m over here just having forgotten everything the MC could do. If he could, then I’m mad again, because that means this is uber forced.

@TNT261 when you say normal level of nationalism, that is not nationalism. What you consider as a good level of nationalism is called patriotism. Nationalism is similar to fanaticism a normal level of fanaticism is not called fanaticism.
