I'm starting to doubt whether Akira is really boy or a gay boy. He always seem to try to reafirm himself as male, a bit too excessively actually, but according to himself only one male is born out of some nearly impossible odds and he already has an older brother. What is more interesting here is their desire to leave the village. Somehow the situation seems much more complicated than what he explained.
