I have to wonder what the point of his mother's misfortunes was, since he still grew up with foster parents who seemingly didn't abuse him. If one goes through abuse that turns one into a sociopath, then that's a cause of sympathy, even if the sociopath inspires revulsion. If one is simply born a sociopath, then no such sympathy can be felt. Feels like the author didn't quite know what to do with this character and halfheartedly tried to go in both directions.

@boldmonkey I mean dude got 10 parents can you even imagine how that feels, I mean some people who in an adoption centers and getting adopted feels that they do not feel loved what if you do that 10 times to a kid. That in itself is already an abuse.

Just imagine yourself each year moving to a different house with a different set of parents and nobody tells you anything why. That’s pretty shitty situation.

Na, na the guy has a receive gene of psychopathy inherited from his father who was also a psychopath, the difference is that his father lived in times of war, so his violence and rape were validated and encouraged by his job, his son however lived under caring families but was also a psychopath so his behavior was now a problem, killing, pillaging, and raping were now not desirable traits, what allowed his father to excel as a soldier, was now getting the son in trouble.

Well, you're right in that such an unstable social situation would lead to some emotional issues for a child, but the major cause of anti-social behavior for orphans tends to be the influence of orphanages, which often had and have oppressive authority figures, poor conditions and a lot of tension and fighting between the orphans themselves. Foster parents being more abusive towards adopted children due to a weaker emotional connection is also a common reason. In the case of Red Beard, it sounds more like he was moved around because he was already violent from the beginning. And murdering a foster family in such a brutal fashion is far outside the norm, mildly put.
@Doomroar
Soldiers don't need to be psychopaths to do such things. Combat temporarily removes many mental inhibitions, and if you've lost friends and suffered averse conditions, not to mention been affected by constant de-humanizing propaganda against your enemy, it can lead to a lot of resentment that does away with empathy and sympathy for the "enemy", who seems less than human. Red Beard's father, a professional rapist and killer, could very well have a family back home that he loves. It's not difficult to make regular people behave in anti-social ways, it's just that societies try to limit the triggers for anti-social behavior so that it's directed towards someone else's society rather than one's own.

Longwinded comments over, sorry.

@boldmonkey i know, i was just talking out of my ass because what was keeping his dad on a job was branding the son a criminal, so i irresponsibly chunked it to genetics to explains why he turned that way despite being in the care of good families even from an early age.

But it is perfectly possible that Red Beard's father was a normal guy under the influence of the dire circumstances of war.

Ah. My bad. Yeah, that seems to be just about what the author himself went with in Red Beard's case, unless we get a more in-depth explanation later, which I doubt, given the exposition pattern for the early losers.

Honestly, this theory really isn’t that crazy.
