What is it with fantasy stories suddenly throwing in "Oh yeah, this is ACTUALLY a post apocalypse story where the modern civilization fell apart thousands of years ago."

It's interesting if that's part of the main premise, but this is chapter 26 and we've seen 0 mention of this anywhere leading up to this.

And for a good reason: this lack of any leading is designed to tell us that this story is not a post apocalypse story, there wasn't any ancient advanced civilization (on our own level with electricity and moving walkways and so on) that fell apart thousands of years ago.

Is it the one where MC is a mage, and the Hero mistreated him like most tsunderes do so he left. Afterwards he discovers he became a sage at some point, beats the hero, but the hero is mind controlled?
