Knowing the authors other works it isn't surprising but tomiko has been built up for some sort of redemption character growth arc for a while. I know everyone forgot because it's been literal years. I'm assuming she might develop and drop the weight at this rate.

Maybe it's because of the subtle change in the author's drawing after the hiatus, but it could also be used to show how much weight she gained and how miserable she became during the summer vacation, because wow, Tomiko is huge now.
