i think Ochi is the only one out of the four who sees the situation for what it really is:
Kanae is an emotional wreck who has been spreading her misery to Hiroshi for as long as they've known each other, preventing him (now intentionally) from pursuing his current goal of baseball. if the two of them (but mostly Kanae) were more mature then they could lean on each other without dragging anyone down, but that wouldn't make for a compelling story

as for the vice captain, he's just an outsider who's probably trying to do what he thinks is the right thing

Ochi is 100% correct without seeing the whole picture. Kanae is an awful person and an emotional wreck, but he only sees the latter and he's basically only going after her because she gets in the way of him and his bro playing baseball. Being an emotional wreck reasonably isn't enough for him to go after her this hard, but as readers we know he's right because she also did insane shit like order a brutal gang rape of a classmate.

Again, Ochi has Kanae pegged, but he doesn't know her like that. I initially considered his accuracy in his assessment of Kanae a matter of authorial fiat for the sake of pricking Kanae, but the longer this incident spans-- and the more flashbacks we get-- the more I think the point is that Ochi could only give such an accurate assessment because he's the same as her and he's (partly) projecting.

Because NO ONE likes Ochi. If whole team wanted to then they would gladly kick out Ochi. He's exactly the opposite coin of Kanae. Both of them had the world against them except Ochi clings to one person while shutting everyone out while Kanae clings to one person while wanting to bring everyone in. Both them show their true happy smiles when being around Hiroshi. He say she's a "parasite" when he is the exact same way as her.

Ochi is the type of guy who would want him and Hiroshi be "us against the world" type of couple.

If we're working with his information, yes he is an asshole. If I found myself in a situation where my friend was dating a person that was so obviously bad for them, I would speak to them instead of viciously harassing their partner. Ochi is an asshole and taking out his anger from not hanging out with his best friend on his best friend's girlfriend for no reason. My point is less "Ochi is the man who's right about everything!" and more "Wow, Ochi is right despite being a fucking asshole"

i would simply wait for it to fall apart, bc other than it affecting his performance, arm aside, it's not as if it's like "i'm gonna ditch practice to go on a date with my gf, tell coach i wasn't feeling well!" or something that might be more common in a more 'normal' story among ppl that age (tho i imagine other than like 'secretly dating the manager' or so , most sports teams are strict about a dating policy or at least a pause during competition even if it's normal to like, date a soccer player or so and wait for them after practice or so)

Kanae is portrayed as this crazy person one bad day away from killing everyone, but really she is the most human person in this book. this is what goes in the mind of a person who doesn't believe they deserve kindness, they self destruct, they get ugly, they make bad choices to avoid pain, they conform to avoid ridicule because someone other than yourself hating you is the worst thing in the world.

She never really trust Hiroshi nor cared for him at first, even after she was told she "may be" in love with him, her heart was always on the fence about it. Only when she had the company and acknowledgement she was looking for, she realized he was an eccentric part of her life. Whenever his kindness was taken for granted, it hurt her the most, someone who was a void of kindness seeing others treat his dedication like happenstance.

this book may be going for how everyone else is using Hiroshi and how it butterfly effects their peers. I believe its going towards a direction where Kanae finds her own love for herself and become the first or last one who no longer needs Hiroshi to love her for her when Hiroshi begins to need her, just a few chapters ago she was posting a stray cat she liked on Instagram trying to figure out who she is

id like to also add that Hiroshi didn't "save" her. he offered her consistent affirmations and moral support. the delinquent guy thought he saved her, where he end up? He wasn't confident he'd get with her which is why he participated in the kidnapping to begin with and got frustrated it didn't work. Hiroshi went the extra mile while other guy was waiting for opportunities to get with her than to actually see she needed help. never asked her what she needed otherwise she wouldn't be selling her body to pedos, he knew and let that happen
