I'm realizing that this setup is actually incredible. It's a triangle where everyone has at least moderate affection for everyone else, but each person has a preferential affection for a different person. Karasuma feels more strongly for Fushimi who feels more strongly for Shijou who feels more strongly for Karasuma. But on the other hand, there's a balancing effect from the more minor relationships, Karasuma strongly respects and admires Shijou who is fascinated by Fushimi who respects and admires Karasuma.

To be honest.
The signals were all there, but generally speaking most mangakas would not be brave enough and would make things open-ended and just baiting it.
And like I said in my previous commentaries, this is real poly relationship and not just a harem where n girls like the protag and end with him but not exactly have any relationship between each other.
But considering we are talking about Japan this was a bold move from the mangaka, heck, even outside Japan is considered a bold move because it's not based on fetishism

Tbh even if it ends up being not that great for the story I appreciate the author going for it, too many stories already played the 'Who's going to win' anyway, we need more authors going for this route, besides the rare case like 100Kano or Kanojo mo Kanojo, every other instance that I can remember is +18 manga where the main character bangs a girl every chapter with the romantic development deep as a puddle.
