I don't recall any hint about it in the first chapter, per se
But I wonder if it'll come out that he just...doesn't care if the world actually ends, on a personal level.

Sure, he's "doing his duty", but all I know is if I were the only person capable of preventing the destruction of the world by making sure the eldritch god-thing who chose me as her partner was always happy, I'd maybe try to acquire some social awareness and not be so stupidly stubborn and both selfish and uncaring about small things like this.
So the fact that he seems to always put his foot in his mouth and take the "bad option" first before fixing it after the fact, and over things as inconsequential as having his photo taken no less, makes it seem like he's not actually interested in taking the role he's been given seriously.

Hopefully we do get some sort of backstory (as in, sooner than later) on this guy and maybe some rationale on his choices and way of being.

To be fair, this is the same guy that said that he doesn't care if the world ends as well as having his said family accidentally dead by her hands.

I'm assuming you're inferring that his parents died in the Outbreak 6 years prior, because I've gone back through all three chapters twice now, and it's not stated one way or the other that I can find.

Along the same lines, I didn't find anything saying he doesn't care if the world ends outright; the most I saw was when he stated that it "was calming" in chapter one when he and Aru were at the top of the building post-abduction, when she'd turned the whole world weird while fighting off her abductors.

So if I missed something, please do let me know the chapter & page number, or whether you're relying on information not found in the manga we've got here thus far, or something.

I wonder how self-aware Aru is. She's quite happy all the time for a potentially world-ending entity... Or is that just the nature of eldritch beings?

A good thought - I think part of it also would involve how they met in the first place, either pre- or post-Outbreak.

MC mentions that the first Cracks appeared 16 years ago, and on the day both he and Aru were born; and that 6 years before the present, the Outbreak occurred, and Aru was ...I guess "born".

Since it seems most people died once infected, I'm guessing Aru was infected (since she's described as half-human), but survived - and the question becomes if she's Aru the Human who's housing an eldritch being, or if Aru is now the eldritch being and the human girl has been erased, or if they're both in there, and the Aru we see is the eldritch being but possesing Aru the Human's memories, personality, quirks, hopes & dreams, and so on.
And, did MC and Aru know one another beforehand? Or did they only meet post-Outbreak/Infection? And how did they meet, if the latter? Almost no one knows who Aru really is (naturally), so I think a big part of what we need to know involves actual backstory for them both, and arguably both in terms of them as individuals and them as a pair.

But it's also only chapter 3, and I think this author's body of work speaks to her ability to write - so I'm happy to be patient and see what we learn as the story unfolds. Just lots of questions in the moment about the setting and the characters, because at face value MC's demeanor and behavior feel (more than) a bit incongruent with his circumstances at large.

So... my current theory is we've got it all backwards - Aru ain't the one destroying the world, Yutaka is.
Note how despite Aru being upset in this chapter, nothing really happens.
Also think back to the recent date - They go to HQ, a tumor forms. They're bored in the halls, nothing really happens. They go for crepes, the tumor recedes. They go to the park, the tumor goes out of hand. Yutaka admits Aru looks pretty, the problem is resolved.
Aru never had a problem with the checkup at HQ, so why did the tumor form? Aru was bored in the halls, but the situation remains stable. Aru likes crepes, but is annoyed by the third-wheeling, the tumor recedes. Aru is overjoyed by the park, the tumor goes wild - WTF? Aru gets complimented, the situation is resolved - fair enough.
Contrast this with Yutaka: Yutaka is concerned about the checkup at HQ - a tumor is formed. Yutaka searches for entertainment for Aru, but doesn't really care himself - situation unchanged. Yutaka finds a way to please Aru(or so he thinks), the tumor recedes. Yutaka doesn't want to go to the park, but is dragged along anyway, clearly uncomfortable with the situation - the tumor gets out of control. Yutaka admits Aru is pretty - that he's happy to be with her - the situation is resolved.

Just.. something I noticed. I reserve the right to say I told you so.. or conveniently forget about this theory, depending on how things play out.
