It’s been interesting to see the slow process of him getting his confidence back.

I find it quite accurate, how a long period of isolation and/or harassment can bring down the mental state of about anyone, and how you need others on your side to pull you back into the light. He really only held up mentally by having a purpose and never letting go.

What IMO is missing from this chapter is Uichi actually landing a punch or two on this guy's face.
I get it all, typical JP pacifist MC, scholarship, school recommendation, not wanting to deal with police, yadda yadda.
I get wanting to talk things out first, but you just stopped a punch going for your GF's face. And dude is clearly delusional and immune to reason. So IDK, use violence to make him understand? At least throw him to the ground or something, instead of this "we are to blame too, lets work together".
I even get "not forgiving but not dwelling on past bullying", but in this case he just stopped a dude trying to punch his GF's face in. Because she stopped him from years-long bullying span that caused Uichi to basically have a panic attacks from riding metro. This IMO warrants SOME emotions.

Agreed, the guy clearly didn't learn anything and just blamed everyone but himself for his predicament. I would have socked the guy for the thing he did to me. Some people need severe discipline or serious fafo to realise they fucked up and what ever happened is their fault.
