I remember reading this chapter when I was a kid. That death traumatized me for a while. It's one of the most gruesome deaths in the series.

I agree with SHTJ. That death actually gives me a 'Holy Shit' moment on how he dies...and spoiler alert, he's not an evil person.

I think what is traumatizing about the old Kindaichi series is that many not-bad people, or even good people got killed brutally because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I take it as the author's indirect way of saying that no revenge is justified because there's no way you're not going to involve innocent people.
