Scary... I wouldn't trust humans to keep doing the key-turning protocol. Better automate the procedure, or just disarm the missiles.

Fortunately or unfortunately for the intended story, those missiles would already be dead... as they were not maintained for likely literal decades or more.

All military hardware have shelf live span, if they were not constantly maintained or refurbished periodically... they basically will quickly turn into non functional hardware or worse... malfunctioning hardware, and some cannot be refurbished past certain point and has to be literally... destroyed like garbage.

By the time suggested in the story, none of those missiles would even have a remote chance of functioning.

This is beyond retarded, and DEFINITELY something you can do something about: at least warn the leader, if you really don't want to make a scene...

Maybe they won't be able to launch, but they will definitely be able to explode

You said what I came to write down. It's all likely non-functional down there. At worst they could get radiation leaks from the decrepit hardware.
