That's a really unsatisfying and frustrating end. I get the goal was humor, but it's not exactly funny when the two people who did the hard work and nearly died end up losing because one of them got embarrassed and apparently can't grip anything. On the other hand the person that did nothing to help and just happened to walk by wins? That's not how merit works. And characters are allowed to get mad about that and not just let it go. The two of them cared a lot about getting the position (and the MC's ultimate dream is to be lord of magic or whatever) and you're telling me both are fine with losing because of dumb luck and coincidence?
