He did 'eat them' but maybe eating their 'souls' leaves the bodies as a comatose husk, we don't know if that one 'troublesome' girl who lied about having a kid/son(?) ended up in a newspaper or so or missing body but these specific cases did have them having mental issues and such and this could just be 'complication with pregnancy' or something/she had near death accidents before so yeah
