As you'll see next chapter (and can guess from this one), Batten is actually having trouble getting food and gives most of it to his pregnant mate. Oyome-chan has no problem there. 😹

I haven't read further than the next two chapters (to TL) but this is generally not that kind of manga where we need to wallow in stupid plot tragedy. He definitely drives some of Oyome-chan's decisions (she's invested in him now), but at least is not dead in the next two chapters and I honestly don't think he will be killed off. As an Actual Fox that Oyome-chan feels responsible for he serves a really good purpose for this manga.

So, basically, there are manga that maliciously wallow in bathos (A-Gumi no Monster), but this is not one of them, any Drama is just a gateway to more cuteness.

Honestly, I wish we could change the default art for this manga, because any time I show this to a new person they see that hugely pregnant pic and are 'uhhhhhhh' and I have to go 'no, this is mostly not that kind of manga I swear!'
