Parts of me are conflicted. I mean, I can interpret this two ways:
A: She knows her limitations and quitting while ahead would be considered a "good" thing
B: She is undervaluing her abilities (maybe fear is involved) and using her parents need for help with their business as an excuse to jump ship

I dunno. It just kinda sad seeing all that hard work go to waste in a sense.

The tough part is unless she has something prepped up for her (like her colleague with the family business), I imagine Tsurukoma would at least need to work on other qualifications before starting on another path.

Ironically, Kiyo (who couldn’t become a Maiko) will probably have a lot of demand on the job market based on her cooking & planning skills and what she has done so far (prepping and cooking for a lot of people is very hard!) Or if she wanted to, she can start her own catering business.

I think Kiyo will be staying at the Manor.

Or she and Kenta may open a restaurant together. Much later in the future. Have breakfast together, go off to cook for others. Come back for dinner together. Remember the prior auntie did not live at the manor.

Of course, especially if Suu is around. I’m using Kiyo as a contrasting reference (since Kiyo is also younger, couldn’t cut it as a Maiko, yet objectively would be in much higher demand in the job market for her skills) to show how rough (and perhaps uneven) the road may be for a Maiko who decided to move to another career despite all the effort they have exerted so far.

The future is scary, but it will come nonetheless... she will find her answer.

I am curious... does Japanese garlic smell? I love garlic and eat a lot, and it pretty common in the cuisine here in Brasil but... i really never notice anything like a bad smell from garlic.

I think I read somewhere it may be because of some bacteria that Japanese people have or don't have in their bodies compared to other ethnic groups, but... is that right? Does someone know anything?

On that same thought... I read too that most people in the world can't digest algae like many people in Asian countries can, because they have specific bacteria that help them digest it, because of their prolonged ingestion of it, those bacteria came to exist in their bodies.

Always thinking about the chapter awhile back where we learned that geiko have to pay for everything themselves... and then if they quit their stuck in the "real world" with only a middle school education.... AND no help from the association that put them on that path... setting girls up for failure

I'd imagine that unless she has friends or family or other personal connections lined up for her, her best options would probably be working in something like a snack bar (or bartending in general) or as a hostess or something like that. But I imagine that there probably still would be some kind of options for her beyond that even if it's not the best.

That's kind of the funny thing about art and performance. Being the one who seems like the best in your year, who has the most talent, who teachers praise the most... that's not actually what matters in the end.

What matters is if you're the person who's lucky enough to not give it up. And I want to be clear: Luck IS involved. Loads of luck.

But it's the only marker in the end.

I definitely couldn't handle "only a little" garlic. There is no such thing as enough garlic!

Oh man, I didn't expect to see Tsurukoma's predicament about her Maiko status to be shown in the manga. I watched the Netflix adaption about it so seeing this in the manga was surprising.

Also thanks for the translation and keep up the good work! Really appreciate it!!

Without knowing for certain my interpretation would be that since they're supposed to be very graceful and delicate in their dance and manner that they can't really afford having any garlic breath. And if you aren't familiar with garlic breath I dunno what's with brazil garlic..

Maybe you are used to the smell. I am an Asian living in the US. Garlics in both my home country and in the US smell a lot. My father has a habit of earing raw garlic everyday and his breath is awful even after he brushed his teeth and used mouthwash. I also avoid eating garlic before sleeping since the lingering smell makes me unable to sleep.
