How would a long sword help? It would be heavier and more unwieldy to use, and it doesn't seem like they are having trouble with the short swords, the short swords help them move quicker and stay agile. The only real issue they have is just that their weapons are seemingly weak and break easily (so need a lot of extras), and that's not something a longer sword would fix.

I rather use spear if I don't have any ranged weapon. With spear at least you can throw it and take another one.

My "ideal" outcome here is that, as is sometimes the case with parasites, they need to be eaten by a secondary host to fully mature and our girl comes back as a body horror bug controlling queen. Premise and lore of this manga doesn't make any sense. First we were told the only way to fight bugs is with butterfly girls. But it seems even steel blades are enough to injure them. But no is using firearms or they are unavailable even though they probably would be highly effective against the bugs. But somehow cars, gasoline and the infrastructure for them is common. Same with electronics like tablets etc.
The mangaka wasted so much pages for useless motivational speech and exposure dumps but didn't even take the time to explain this discrepancy.

"Bugs are able to nullify a wide range of weapons" meaning: it would be inconvenient for the story if firearms were used. There is no other reason. Don't talk so high and mighty as if there were more to it.

There is a believable reason why swords are used in "Dune". Unless swords are growing on trees, there is none here. Even Strike Witches has more believable weaponry than this.
