I really like how instead of using the new girl to compete with Mutsuki the author used her to show how shallow their relation is as a whole. There's no actual reason for Mutsuki to love Akira not does Akira has to love Mutsuki. Akira is doing it out of returning feeling he received and Mutsuki is doing it out of one act of kindness where Akira didn't even matter as a person. She(probably) would have "loved" any other person if they help her. As she can't even tell what she likes about him. It's not that she likes him as a whole or she can't convey what she likes about him as she can say she likes him out of the one act. That one act should be start not the foundation of the relation. That's when you know your relationship is shallow.
