I just thought about it, but with the introduction of smartphones, both in this story's narrative and in our real life, some of the "strangers' romance" charm might be gone. There's no real angst in missing a train, or having to move out suddenly, or missing each other in the crowd: you have a way of immediately and reliably contacting the other person on you at all times.

Although it didn't stop the author from making Sakura's phone all but obsolete due to her shyness and social anxiety 😮‍💨
