Reading this while about to go cook for the first time with a lovely old copper pot I inherited from my own grandmother (after I got it retinned). Not exactly the same - she'd given up on it and just left it on display many years ago - but a very similar feeling.

(no idea how old the pot is; it has no identifying marks whatsoever as far as I can tell)

Feels good.

Losing your grandparents is always tough. I lost my grandma almost 2 years ago and my grandpa’s health has been on the decline for a while. Father time is unforgiving.

I’ve been to the Marufuku honten (main store) location in Sennichimae - It’s south of Dotonbori canal and right between Namba station (where the Nankai Rapi:t airport express train from KIX terminates) and ‘Ponbashi (Osaka’s otaku central).

The coffee’s decent but there are better places even amongst Osaka’s Shotengai shopping streets, and it’s also not really exclusive to the area (unlike 551 Horai Nikuman in Osaka or Shinshindo breads in Kyoto) - it’s available in Tokyo (there's one at Yodobashi Akihabara and Tokyo station Marunouchi-side). The interior does look like the depiction in the manga, and during my visit there was a collab with Re-ment (the mini food model people) so there was a Marufuku cafe display…inside the Marufuku cafe. Very Zoolander.

Strictly speaking that’s not the original location (it was moved there in 1990 from several doors down) but it does exude a certain oldschool charm. I don’t recommend the hotcakes there though - not really all that different from standard flapjacks.

On a more serious note, please make sure your loved ones get mammograms regularly, especially if they are over the age of 40. Early detection is vital to dealing with breast cancer - lost an aunt early last year due to that (she fought it for 10 years), and I cannot stress enough how painful it could be, both for the patient and the caregiver(s).

Some older people speak more formally more consistently - I recall a line in a romcom I read that was saying how cute and old-school it was that one of the MCs pairs of grandparents still used San with each other after fifty years of marriage. And she was asking quite an important question - it speaks to her death, even if she hadn't made that clear to Saki. That said, there may be a different more important reason, I'm not an expert. Also, is Saki her daughter in law or by birth?
