I think it's because changing gender doesn't change sexuality, it's that changing gender let's them understand their sexuality.

I hope it's not. "He always has been that way" case would be plain and boring, imo. But "his preferences magically changed alongside with his body" also isn't any better. I want him to be slowly twisted into new views by the combination of gender change, social pressure, funny circumstances and the new open opportunities

I originally was gonna put that, but after rereading chapter 1, there are mentions of Richou wanting to be "popular with girls." Though I suppose there are several ways you can interpret Richou's mindset there, so there's that. Now I actually perfer the interpretation you mentioned, so I'll stick with that for now. Not that it's like a make or break for me tho (usually).

there was another story similar to this, where the MC initially claimed to want the same thing, then did nothing but hang out with the best bud MC obviously had feelings for

so did they actually want a gf, or was it societal pressure and they were just expected to want one? maybe all they wanted was some friends
