A bola?

Maybe, and this is just me and the entire weight of human history, but... maybe, consider a sling?
Uses the same (or less) materials, does actual damage to a target, and it can almost certainly be combined with magic; this gives you huge advantages over a bola.

Also, isn't a bola way more skilled than learning a sling? I learned how to use a sling effectively in about 30 minutes; I never really got the hang of using a bola... and I can actually lasso stationary and slowly moving objects, as a starting point.

So... using a bola seems like maybe the author hasn't left his apartment complex since... like, birth.
